NCAA POWER INDEX CALCULATION METHOD
Step 4 - Performing a Rating Pass
As stated earlier, ratings are done in a series of "passes," using the values from the previous pass to calculate the ratings for the current pass.
Within each pass, each team's rating is calculated one at a time.
If a team has no wins, its rating for the current pass is simply the lowest previous pass rating of its opponents multiplied by the Strength of Schedule Dial and divided by 100.
Reminder: a tie, or an overtime loss, will result in the team being credited with a win.
If a team has at least one win, then its rating is calculated using these steps:
- Calculate a Game Rating for each game it played;
- Sum the values of its losses;
- Check the wins, one at a time, to see if they should be excluded because they would cause the rating to go down and the Minimum Wins Dial value number of wins have already been counted;
- Check the losses again, one at a time, to see if any should be excluded.
Calculating each game's Game Rating
Calculate each game's Game Rating as follows:
- Start by multiplying the opponent's previous pass rating by the SOS Dial value, and then dividing by 100
- If the team won the game, add the (unmodified) Win/Loss Dial value
- If the team won the game and the opponent's previous pass rating is greater than the Quality Win Bonus Minimum Rating Dial value,
subtract the dial's value from the opponent's previous pass rating, multiply it by the Quality Win Bonus Multiplier Dial value, and add it to the Game Rating;
- Finally, multiply the Game Rating by the Game Value to determine the final Game Rating for the game.
When this is completed, separate the wins from the losses, and rank each in descending order of their (Game Rating / Game Value) values.
Example
I will skip ahead to Pass 31 in the 2025 Division III football calculation, as it gives a better example of when games are skipped.
Here are the Game Ratings for William Paterson in Pass 31 of the 2025 Division III football calculation, with wins and losses separated and each ranked in decreasing (Game Rating / Game Value) order:
| Wins | Round 30 Rating | SOS | Record | QWB | Game Value | Game Rating |
| Castleton | 38.87776739 | 23.326660434 | 40 | 0 | 0.9 | 56.9939943906 |
| Moravian | 38.69069415 | 23.21441649 | 40 | 0 | 1.1 | 69.535858139 |

"I thought you said these were in order" - they are, in (Game Rating divided by Game Value) order.

Next - Step 5 - Count Losses, and Check Wins
