NCAA POWER INDEX CALCULATION METHOD
Step 6 - Check Losses
"Didn't we already add the losses at the start of Step 5?"
Yes, but now we have to go through them again to see which ones shouldn't have been included in the first place.
Just as wins that lower a team's NPI shouldn't be included, losses that raise it shouldn't be included either. The main difference is, there is no minimum or maximum number
of losses that need to be included.
Check each loss in the order established in Step 4.
If (Total Game Rating - the game's Game Rating) / (Total Game Value / the game's Game Value) is less than Current NPI, then adding it in the first place
made the NPI go up, so remove it from the calculations; subtract the game's Game Rating from Total Game Rating and the game's Game Value from Total Game Value,
then recalcualte Current NPI = the new Total Game Rating / the new Total Game Value.
If (Total Game Rating - the game's Game Rating) / (Total Game Value / the game's Game Value) is greater than Current NPI, then it remains in the calculation.
Once every loss is checked, the final Current NPI value is the team's NPI for this pass.
Example
Again, looking at the losses for William Paterson in 2025 football, in decreasing (Game Rating / Game Value) order:
OpponentRound 30 Rating | SOS | Record | QWB | Game Value | Game Rating |
| Chris Newport | 77.53770104 | 46.522620624 | 0 | 0 | 1.1 | 51.1748826864 |
| Salisbury | 68.61629986 | 41.169779916 | 0 | 0 | 0.9 | 37.0528019244 |
| Rowan | 60.519186 | 36.3115116 | 0 | 0 | 0.9 | 32.68036044 |
| College of NJ | 55.34437693 | 33.206626158 | 0 | 0 | 0.9 | 29.8859635422 |
| Salve Regina | 54.30368377 | 32.582210262 | 0 | 0 | 1.1 | 35.8404312882 |
| Montclair St | 52.65492403 | 31.592954418 | 0 | 0 | 1.1 | 34.7522498598 |
| W Connecticut | 49.01902955 | 29.41141773 | 0 | 0 | 0.9 | 26.470275957 |
| Kean | 42.40241826 | 25.441450956 | 0 | 0 | 1.1 | 27.9855960516 |
After including the wins, Total Game Rating is 402.372414, Total Game Value is 10, and Current NPI is now 40.237241.
If the loss to Christopher Newport is removed, the revised Current NPI would be (402.372414 - 51.174883) / (10 - 1.1) = 39.460397, which is less than the Current NPI, so this game is removed;
subtract 51.174833 from the Total Game Rating and 1.1 from the Total Game Value, and recalculate Current NPI = 351.197532 / 8.9 = 39.460397.
If the loss to Salisbury is removed, the revised Current NPI would be (351.197531 - 37.052802) / (8.9 - 0.9) = 39.268091, which is less than the Current NPI, so this game is removed;
subtract 37.052802 from the Total Game Rating and 0.9 from the Total Game Value, and recalculate Current NPI = 314.14473 / 8 = 39.268091.
If the loss to Rowan is removed, the revised Current NPI would be (314.14473 - 32.68036) / (8 - 0.9) = 39.642869, which is greater than the Current NPI, so this game remains in the calculation.
Similarly, removing any of the other losses would cause the Current NPI to increase, so all of them remain as well.
William Paterson's final Pass 31 NPI is 39.268901.
